Bridgwater train station

Our new AR experience will tell stories about Bridgwater's historic train station

‘Hidden Station’ is an inclusive, community art project for Seed Sedgemoor and Severnside Community Rail Partnership. We’re collaborating with artists Jayde Perkin and David J. McMillan to create eye-catching, accessible augmented reality installations at Bridgwater Station in Somerset for commuters, tourists and locals to enjoy.

With ‘Hidden Station’, our team is excited to bring accessible and vibrant Augmented Reality to Bridgwater Railway Station. Collaborating with artists Jayde Perkin and David MacMillan and Bridgwater residents, we aim to create a magical digital experience that reflects the community's unique stories and perspectives.

How will it work?

We are excited to creatively engage and connect with a diverse group of Bridgwater residents through ‘Hidden Station’, including those who may not typically participate in art-related activities. We aim to do this by using the historical Railway Station as a focal point for a multifaceted AR experience. Highlighting the importance of place and a sense of belonging and ownership, we want to collect and share the experiences of everyday people who have passed through the station.

To achieve this, we are hosting co-creation workshops in which Bridgwater residents can share their personal connection to the station: fond family memories, new encounters, or recollections of friends who’ve worked there in generations gone by.

These anecdotes will inspire a vivid visual narrative to be displayed throughout the Railway Station, featuring distinctive 2D characters magically brought to life with interactive AR filters for social media. Visitors to the Station will be able to enjoy the physical art installations, and can also use their phones to reveal the secrets of the Hidden Station, and bring characters to life in imaginative and playful 3D. The artwork and signage will be unobtrusive and will serve as a tempting invitation that hints at the rich stories that are waiting to be discovered.

This is where we need your help. Let’s breathe new life into this historic station!

Has the station been a starting point for big adventures, sad farewells, or welcome returns? Has it taken you to family days out eating fish and chips in Weston Super Mare, or to see your favourite bands in Bristol and Exeter?

Did your great-grandfather drive the train? Maybe they controlled the signal box? Or maybe you’re the friendly face that checks our tickets every day?

Use this online form to submit your Hidden Station story or if you are free to drop into one of our in-person workshops, please come along on Sat, 25th March from 10am-4pm (Bridgwater Library) or on Tue, 28th March from 6pm-8pm (Bridgwater Townhall).

To experience the final eye-catching artworks and their ‘hidden stories’ in Augmented Reality join us for the opening at Bridgwater Railway Station in June 2023 (date to be announced) and follow our newsletter to hear about the latest news.
